Guide to Clitheroe

Nestling between Pendle Hill and the grandeur of the Forest of Bowland, is the bustling historic market town of Clitheroe. Hear the echoes of the chiming Town Clock as you amble through the undulating pebbled streets seeing that traditional customs and local charm really do still exist in these mordern times.

Clitheroe Traders ready to offer you the warmest of welcomes.Browsing shop windows and displays, you'll discover that many of these individual shops and boutiques have stood the test of time and have been run by the same families for generations. Expertise and advice is offered as a matter of course but for added value our local folk may also have a tale or two to tell.

Should you be lucky enough to visit the town on Market Day, then you'll see the town's unique character. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays are the days when the cabin shutters are lifted and local traders set out their stalls.

Clitheroe Castle and ParkIt's hard to miss the massive rock of limestone which dominates Clitheroe's streets, crowned with the Keep of an ancient Castle, of uncertain age, but at least some 800 years. It's secrets and stories can be found in the newly refurbished Clitheroe Castle Museum, up a steep hill but well worth the climb. Here, you'll journey through 350 millions years of the area's impressive social and natural history.

Follow the meandering paths around the Castle Grounds in search of the bowling green and Pavilions Cafe, a large open-air auditorium with bandstand where concerts ranging from brass band to rock music can be heard in the summer.

In summer, relax on the banks of the River Ribble at Edisford Bridge Picnic Area. Once a battle ground between the Scots and Normans this is now a pleasant family area where kids can play.
