Yulia Chaplina and Yuri Kalnits are two brilliant Russian-born musicians who are very much a part of the London music scene after studying in London.
Yulia, a Steinway artist, first began her musical journey west after initially studying in Rostov-on-Don before moving to Berlin in 2006 to study with Klaus Hellwig at the University of Arts in Berlin. Then receiving her Master of Music degree from the Royal College of Music in London where she was appointed Mills Williams Junior Fellow in 2013. She has also been taught by Mstislav Rostropovitch, András Schiff, Mitsuko Uchida, Paul Badura-Skoda and Liliya Zilberstein. Yulia made her debut aged seven, performing Bach’s Keyboard Concerto in F minor with the Rostov state Symphony Orchestra. Her first major competition win was in Poland when she was nine. She later won international competitions in Paris, London, Kiev, Kharkov and St. Petersburg. She won first prize and Gold Medal in the junior section of the Vth Tchaikovsky International Competition. Her CD of Russian music was described in the American Record Guide as “an outstanding disc and one I will return to often”.
Violinist Yuri Kalnits attended the Gnessin Music School in Moscow before obtaining his BMus at the Royal College of Music in Moscow in 1996. He won two Diapason d’Or awards for his recording of Weinberg’s Violin Sonatas, being described as “an interpreter of the highest order” and has played at places like The Purcell Room, Kings Place, St John’s Smith Square, the Barbican, St Martins-in-the-Fields, the Small Hall of Moscow Conservatory, the Lincoln Centre and Suntory Hall. He has broadcast with at such separated places as BBC Radio 3 and New Zealand National radio.
