Piano 4 Hands are Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa, highly respected pianists in their own right. They will be playing Mozart’s Andante with Variations in G major; David Matthews’ Variations on a theme of Handel; Schubert Fantasy in F minor, Debussy: Petite Suite; Prokofiev: Classical Symphony and Ravel: La Valse.
David Matthews was born in 1943 in London. His family was musical, though not formally trained but he started to compose at age 16. His younger brother Colin is also a composer. For three years he was associated with Benjamin Britten and the Aldeburgh Festival. He did not want to teach, so he turned to orchestration of film music and writing. In 1980 he wrote a book about the composer Michael Tippett, who he admires enormously.
