Forest of Bowland

Most of Ribble Valley lies within the Forest of Bowland, originally designated as an Outstanding Area of Natural Beauty, and now recognised as a ‘National landscape’ It is a unique and magical area where every season brings a its own colours and atmosphere, and it becomes possible to discover peace and tranquility in the open fells and wooded valleys. For Bowland is not a Forest as the name suggests, the word Forest is an ancient term meaning ‘hunting ground’ and the majority of the landscape is open country. Bowland is home to a wide range of flora and wildlife and the area is particularity important for the breeding of upland birds and notable wildflower meadows.

This living landscape has been formed over centuries due to the close relationship between human activity and the land, from dry-stoned walls, hedgerows and barns, to open moors and grazed fields. The local food and drink produce is important for supporting the many farmers who manage the beautiful landscape and supporting the local economy.
